lady gaga’s fashion eras
If you could do anything once and get away with it what would you do?
With no hesitation, Gaga replies 'Die.’
Maybe the singer hasn't passed away, but certainly her looks have been to die for. With the eclectic style dominating not only her lyrical trajectory but also fashion one, Lady Gaga had many style eras that joined her albums, and the synchronization between the musical and fashion world is more eloquent than you thought.
THE FAME ERA
Putting Gaga in the spotlight of the musical industry, the fame era' haven't only proposed iconic music moments, but also, fashion ones. With one pretty settled identity, the debut album had a lowkey surrealist spice in addition to the glitter-glam aesthetic, where disco ball and 80's references were almost everywhere. The new face of the pop icon contained geometric suits, hair bows, massive square sunglasses, lots of catsuit and latex outfits and David Bowie-inspired make-up. And with that, the world of pop culture saw themselves faced with a not-usual concept, that brought a new impression to look sexy while being weird.
With such pieces as an Origami Dress, another Mirrored and even a bubble one, the visual playground Gaga planned to bring that idea happened rapidly and it was quite instinctive, causing her VMA'S presentations to be besides spectacle, fashion shows.
THE FAME MONSTER ERA
Giving a second view of the fame with 'the fame monster' album, the pop singer aimed to bring a more dark and gothic style also, where the surrealist tone of the fashion got weirder and weirder. From Lobster shoes to a meat dress, Lady Gaga turned herself into a horror film heroine, always giving something to stare at.
With that darker side, that included dark make-up, long lace gowns and peculiar pieces, the star molded representing the negative side of fame, adhering to pieces from Alexander McQueen and Thierry Mugler mostly.
BORN THIS WAY ERA
“How can we f**k with the malleable minds of onlookers and shift the world's perspective on what's beautiful? I asked myself this question. And the answer? Drag.”
- Lady Gaga
The third era, Born This Way, besides bringing political, social, sexual and religious topics, also brought the self love and self-acceptance messages, which obviously were manifested at the fashion playground.
When promoting the album with prosthetic horns and protruding bones, the pop singer suggested how the real Lady Gaga looked, and even with that, she managed to reborn'arriving in an egg chamber at the 53th Grammy Awards. Maintaining the dark. Now with a controversial and sensual tone, Gaga did the job of a rockstar, releasing not only superstar songs but also a prominent style. The sexual and queer topics addressed in lyrics and interview also were present at fashion, when Gaga introduced her male alter ego Jo Calderone to the world, that has a James Dean swagger style.
ARTPOP ERA
If we mix the three previous eras, ARTPOP would be the byproduct, combining each new grand outfit and fashion statement explosion. With seashells, bikinis, blonde dreadlocks, white makeup, multitudes of lace, the edge that pushed the world was far tougher than expected, containing an almost mystical good-chaotic environment.
Commonly known as the pinpoint of her career, the aim of the album was to add art and pop concepts in a single one, and that surely resulted in the fashion area too, where there was a reference to 'The Rebirth of Venus' painting, and many messy art, because the visual identity of this era, not only in videoclips but specially in fashion field was that messy-chic -maximalist art.
CHEEK TO CHEEK ERA
Different from everything Gaga has established, Cheek to Cheek brought out the classical glamour in the singer. Opting for floor-length gowns and shimmering jewelry, the star paid homage to female icons such as Amy Winehouse and Cher, taking many of their looks as some sort of inspiration. More chic, a black curly wig was added during this era, and the jazzy style evoked made Gaga look like the modern-day version of a 70s Cher.
JOANNE ERA
In the sixth era, which is considered the most personal one too, the style prevailed is western, containing a variation of outfits that came in the form of glitter cowboy boots, chaps, pink suits, plain T-shirts and simple jeans. After the fantastic world Gaga's last eras brought, her fans took time to adjust to their idols new uniform that consisted in the country environment with cut-off denim shorts, cropped plain t-shirt and the trademark symbol of the era, a pink cowboy hat.
A STAR IS BORN ERA
Even being called 'a star is born', the star was already between us for a really long time. Inspired by the classic glamour of Hollywood, the accentuated elegance present in this era left the street-style and red carpet looks from the pop singer contaminated for what I will call the Old Hollywood effect.
Maintaining the notable elegance of this new era, the legacy of making fashion statements were still valued by the singer, and were actually perceived in the 2019 Met Gala for example, where the singer was the event host, and showcased four separate outfits relating to the theme of 'camp' that were considered quite iconic for the fashion enthusiasts.
CHROMATICA ERA
If you thought that Barbie's movie announcement was the only reason for pink domination, clearly you haven't seen many Chromatica pictures.
With an essentially head-to-toe pink atmosphere, Gaga united everyone to dance, with a futuristic and euphoric tone. With metallic and eye-catching pieces that have a visual playground defined, the pop singer let the era with the spice of drama and bold she adores, but still bringing the power of the pink power ranger. which obviously caused some nostalgia in her fans. Focusing on pieces by young up-and-comers designers in the fashion industry. this era is not only marked by pink, eccentricity and future, but also, a space that helps the new generation of designers.
